where to find barramundi

Barramundi inhabit a range of environments, including freshwater rivers, estuaries, and coastal waters in the far north. One of our favourite destinations, Princess Charlotte Bay, is renowned for barra fishing. The bay offers a variety of fishing environments, including mangrove-lined creeks, shallow flats, deep channels, and rocky outcrops. In addition, the surrounding waters of Princess Charlotte Bay are home to several reefs and fishing grounds accessed exclusively by boat.

OTHER SPECIES IN PRINCESS CHARLOTTE BAY

Princess Charlotte Bay is home to a diverse range of fish species, including barramundi, mangrove jack, queenfish, trevally, salmon, mackerel, and more. The area is also known for its large mud crabs and prawns.

 BARRAMUNDI Season

Barramundi have a seasonal migration pattern and are most active during the warmer months of the year, typically from October to April. During this time, the water temperature and conditions are optimal for barramundi feeding and spawning.

Fishing techniques

A variety of fishing techniques can be used to catch barramundi, depending on the fishing environment and conditions. Popular techniques include casting lures or soft plastics, trolling, and fly fishing. Live bait, such as mullet or prawns, can also be effective, especially in estuary environments.

Regulations

Fishing for barramundi is subject to various regulations in North Queensland, including size and bag limits, as well as seasonal closures in some areas. Visitors are advised to check the latest fishing regulations and obtain the necessary fishing permits before fishing in the region.
